The second Formula 1 outing of the year in Imola, Italy did not disappoint. The rain came down Sunday morning as the drivers lined up on the grid, making for an exciting start as the lights went out at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Max Verstappen overtook pole winner Lewis Hamilton around the first corner and never looked back, easily taking his first win of the 2021 season. Hamilton battled back after some more mishaps to finish in second and fan-favorite Lando Norris won driver of the day and took third place after qualifying back in eighth. The wet conditions made for a thrilling race from start to finish and we saw a few great storylines emerge that should be fun to watch as the season continues.

The Battle for a Mercedes Seat
Even though Mercedes has won the last seven Constructor's titles in F1, the award given to the team with the most points, many think a driver change is on the way this coming offseason. The current driver lineup of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have won the last four Constructor's titles and are once again in the lead after two races in 2021. So why would Mercedes make a change from a proven winning recipe?
The answer is George Russell. Russell, a 23-year-old driver for the Williams F1 team is also a backup driver for Mercedes and has shown his skill in one of the slowest cars on the grid over the past few seasons. Russell has out-qualified his teammate in every single race he's driven and proved his worth to Mercedes last season in Bahrain. With Lewis Hamilton sidelined by COVID-19, Russell jumped in the Mercedes for the first time and led the Grand Prix for 61 laps until the team made a costly mistake that bumped Russell out of the top 10. Even with the disappointing finish, Russell showed the team what he's capable of and has continued the excellent display with Williams this year.
On Sunday in Italy, Russell challenged Bottas for a top 10 position midway through the race, but sent them both into the barriers, ending their weekend. While the crash was an unfortunate result for both drivers, the F1 world saw that Russell was able to compete with the mighty Mercedes in one of the worst cars in the sport. I would love to see Russell get another shot in the Mercedes this year and I think he'd be a great compliment to his British mentor, Lewis Hamilton.
Ferrari's Return
Ferrari struggled last year, finishing sixth in the Constructor's championship. The team had never finished worse than fourth in their 60-plus year history, and they seem to be back to that historical pace in 2021. The two Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finished in P4 and P5 at the team's home grand prix in Italy on Sunday. It was a strong outing for the two young drivers who will try to restore Ferrari's greatness in 2021.
After the first two races, Ferrari sits in fourth place as a team, just seven points behind McLaren in third. It should be a fantastic battle between the two historically great teams who have fallen off slightly in the last decade. Even though the teams are rivals on the track, each team's best driver, Charles Leclerc for Ferrari and Lando Norris for McLaren, are good friends off the track. I'm excited to see how the young racers handle the rivalry and compete each weekend. The future of Formula 1 is bright and is in the hands of a few extremely talented 20-year-olds.
Be sure to watch the third race of the season in Portugal on Sunday, May 2 at 10 a.m., and comment your thoughts on George Russell's future in Formula 1!

Hi Devin! Although I didn't tune in to the most recent Formula One race, the race in Italy sounds super exciting. I am happy to hear that Max Verstappen pulled out a win. I could definitely see the wet conditions making for an exciting race, but I wonder if it could also pose potential danger to the drivers and their vehicles. It sounds like Mercedes made a great decision by adding George Russell to their team. It is impressive to see such talent from such a young driver, and I have a feeling that he will continue to be very successful this year. I agree that the future of Formula One is bright and I am looking forward to watching…
